Latent Labs

Latent Labs is a generative AI company building foundation models for protein design. Founded in 2023 by Dr. Simon Kohl, formerly co-lead of DeepMind's protein design team and a core contributor to AlphaFold, the company develops models that allow biotechnology and pharmaceutical partners to design novel therapeutic molecules, including antibodies, enzymes and macrocycles. It emerged from stealth in 2025 with $50 million in funding.

Its product line comprises two frontier models for molecular and protein design: Latent-X and its successor, Latent-X2. Both are reported to deliver state-of-the-art results in protein binding. The company pairs its AI research with in-house wet lab facilities, using experimental validation to test model outputs rather than relying on computation alone.

Latent Labs operates from offices in London and San Francisco. Its staff has been recruited from DeepMind, Microsoft, Google, Stability AI, Exscientia, Mammoth Bio, Altos Labs and Zymergen. The stated mission is to make biology programmable through generative AI, with the aim of enabling partners to move with greater speed and precision in drug discovery.
